earthBODYment...
IN A TIME of UNPRECEDENTED ECOLOGICAL CRISES....
~AN ECO-SOMATIC DRAMATIC EXPLORATION OF CONNECTION~
The Intersection of Deep Ecology and the Expressive Arts
earthBODYment is the meeting of consciousness and creativity,
expression and ecology,
movement and mindfulness,
engagement with earth,
art, awareness and activism,
improvisation and interconnectedness...
earthBODYment Workshops Explore Our Connections
Between Mind, Body, Earth and Each Other using Movement, Sound, Language, Poetry and Drama in an
Engaged Practice of Awareness and Reflection.
In the earthBODYment eco-somatic dramatic approach, our learning and sharing is localized from and within our bodies, through which we explore our deep interconnectedness. Rooted in the exploration of our evolutionary journey, we reawaken this exploration in the present: as we each carry and embody this journey in each of bodies...and within this exploration we reawaken to the sharing of a common ancestor: the first cell...making us related to every plant and animal on Earth.
The world of movement and drama foster and allow for a constant re-imagining of how we might live together. An earthBODYment workshop offers opportunities to re-weave our ecocultural web by examining, questioning, mirroring, and reflecting our societal structures and ecological threads by engaging in the natural and ever-present movements and flux exhibited by our planet Earth.
“A living art immediately subject to social change, theater possesses a unique capacity to generate new stories that can root us in a sustainable future.”
~Theresa J. May
earthBODYment is the art of playing for our collective survival!
"The only antidote to [Earth's] destruction is creation. [...] this is in an age that may see us either go down the drain or create a whole new civilization. Precisely because the standing of posterity is so tenuous, art is now more relevant than it has ever been. And again, I mean not just art but artfulness, playfulness, seriousness, connectedness, structure, wholeness. And heart." ~Stephen Nachmonovitch
earthBODYment participants are able to explore their connection to themselves, each other and the Earth and are able to engage with their feelings ranging from gratitude through to despair, moving with them and through them...listening and responding to their earthbodies in the context of being inextricably a part of a larger Earthbody.
"I am full of gratitude for the other day. You have such a beautiful ability to give space, and to offer ample space for us to be. How powerful to speak to us about our choices being perfect. I have only ever rarely seen that degree of honouring our nature and potential in any tradition. You are a gem and a revolutionary and inspiring leader."
~ Mariko Ihara, participant
I began to develop earthBODYment as a means of integrating my long-standing involvement in the ecological movement with my love of the art of improvisation...recognizing the power of connection and momentum, the immediacy and responsiveness, the awareness and action inherent in both of these creative pursuits.
~ The Work that Reconnects: Deep Ecologist Joanna Macy's body of work that assists with expressing our feelings of despair for the state of our planet in peril and transforming these into feelings of empowerment;
~ Action Theater™: the embodied physical improvisational form rooted in presence and moment-to-moment awareness;
and a series of dramatic and poetic conventions enabling and creating a safe space for participants to explore our interconnectedness.
All that is required of participants is themselves -- whatever age, whatever ability or movement level!
earthBODYment is accessible to everyone and does not require any artistic experience...the experience of living on, in, as, of, and with Earth is all that is required!

"The breathing, sensing body draws its sustenance and its very substance from the soils, plants and elements that surround it; it continually contributes itself, in turn, to the air, to the composting earth, to the nourishment of insects and oak trees and squirrel, ceaselessly spreading out of itself as well as breathing the world into itself, so that it is very difficult to discern, at any moment, precisely where the living body begins and where it ends." ~ David Abram
earthBODYment workshops celebrate the expression of our earthbodies!
