about me...

Bronwyn Preece’s passion for expression marries creativity with consciousness, art with activism, melding ecological, social and

political engagement with physical theatre and writing.  Bronwyn is an eco-disciplinary artist, who is currently an MA Candidate in Applied Theatre.  She

holds a BFA in Applied Theatre (with Distinction) from the University of Victoria.

Bronwyn focuses on art as an expression of our interconnectedness, melding contemplative, reflective practices with that of engaged dramatic

and somatic discourse. earthBODYment is the name given to Bronwyn's exploratory expressive arts approach.  Bronwyn incorporates

techniques learned from her work with Deep Ecologist Joanna Macy, her work with Master Improviser Ruth Zaporah in Action Theater™ and approaches

learned from working with Drama-in-Education pioneers Dorothy Heathcote, Jonothan Neelands, Peter O'Connor and Warwick Dobson.

Through improvisation, drama conventions and contemplative practices, she fosters an environment of engaged reflective action, amongst

participants and facilitator, co-arising as a dynamic, potent and enabling energy.  At its root drama means to do, to act and by underscoring the

work with an eco-somatic approach, Bronwyn aims to make evident the interdependence between ourselves, each other and our world as a

whole.  The timely nature of Bronwyn's work comes at a point in history where the world is facing unprecedented ecological

crises...

In 1999, Bronwyn began studying Action Theater™, taking her first workshop with master improviser Ruth Zaporah. She continued to study with

Zaporah, and became Canada’s first Certified Action Theater™ Teacher in 2006.  Since this time, Bronwyn has been offering classes and

workshops for both adults and children; the able-bodied and the physically-challenged, in schools, privately and for community organizations,

which include workshops for The Power of Hope, and facilitating at gatherings such as Navigating the Great Turning UnConference

(Vancouver, 2011).  She will be facilitating earthBODYment™ workshops at the 8th International Conference on Environmental, Cultural,

Economic and Social Sustainability (2012, UBC); at the ASLE (Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment) 2012

Environment, Culture and Place in a Rapidly Changing North Symposium in June in Juneau, Alaska; and at the Earth Matters on Stage

Symposium (2012, Carnegie Melon, Pittsburgh).

Artful communication is also evident in Bronwyn’s use of the written word.

Having a daughter sparked a shift towards writing for children. Gulf Islands Alphabet  (2011) is being published by Simply Read

Books and Off-the-Grid Kid is forthcoming with Eifrig Publishing in 2012.  Bronwyn has published in The Trumpeter: Journal of

Ecosophy and her poetry is featured on Joanna Macy's website.  Her resource handbook Food Security-into-Drama: Workshops for the

Classroom and Community  is endorsed by the Canadian NGO LifeCycles Project.

Creating  outlets for meaningful social dialogue also led Bronwyn to 6 consecutive years (’02-’08) in local politics as an elected member with the

Islands Trust: the municipal-level government for the Gulf Islands region of British Columbia, Canada: North America's first government working

under an environmental mandate.  Bronwyn was the youngest woman ever elected to the postion.  She was 24 at the time.

Bronwyn is based out of Victoria, BC and her off-the-grid homestead on Lasqueti Island, BC, Canada.
